A boot gift only works when the size is right
Boots are a great gift for a husband, father, brother or a friend starting a new job, but they only work if the fit is right. Before you buy, quietly check the size on a pair they already wear, and note the width if the label mentions it.
You need three things: their UK or IND shoe size, whether they prefer roomy or snug footwear, and the kind of use the boots will get. Someone who wears UK 9 in sports shoes may need UK 9.5 in a leather boot worn with thick socks, because sneakers and leather boots are built on different lasts. For site work, always go up rather than down, and never guess by “he looks like a 9”.
- Check the size printed inside a pair they already own, without asking.
- Note their usual sock thickness and whether they use insoles.
- Formal and Chelsea styles run slimmer; work boots run roomier.
- Ask a sibling or spouse about width – broad feet need round-toe models.
- Keep the bill handy: an exchange is simpler than a wrong-size surprise.
Colour is the easy part. Tan and dark brown suit almost everyone, black is safest for office and formal wear, and a slightly darker shade hides scuffs better for daily use.
