How to Pick the Right Boot Size and Width for Indian Feet

Measure first, then choose the size

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and mark the tip of your longest toe. Do this in the evening, when feet swell slightly, and measure both feet in centimetres. Use the longer one. As a rough guide, 25.5 cm is about UK 7 / IND 7, 26.5 cm is UK 8, 27.5 cm is UK 9 and 28.5 cm is UK 10.

Width matters as much as length, and it is the reason most boots come back to us. Indian feet often run broad across the ball, so a boot that is snug at the heel can still squeeze the toes. Wrap a tape around the widest part of your foot at the end of the day; if it measures more than about 10.5 cm, look for wide-fit or round-toe models rather than pointed ones, and avoid heavy stitching right where the little toe sits.

  • Leave 8-10 mm of space between your longest toe and the front of the boot.
  • Your heel should lift no more than a few millimetres when you walk.
  • Wear the socks you plan to use, because thick socks change the fit by half a size.
  • Try boots on late in the day, and test both feet, since one is usually larger.
  • Leather gives about half a size with wear; synthetic uppers barely move at all.

If you are between sizes, take the larger one for boots you wear with thick socks, and the smaller one for slim Chelsea boots worn with regular socks. A thin insole can fix a boot that feels slightly loose, and a cobbler can stretch one tight spot, but no repair fixes a boot that is a full size too small. Check the width across the ball of your foot as well as the length, since narrow lasts are the usual cause of toe pain in Indian conditions.
